What is bouldering?
Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that involves lower walls and more technical movements and is done without ropes or harnesses. It is one of the most accessible forms of climbing, as you do not need formal training or equipment to enjoy this sport!

Recommended gear and tools:

  • Comfortable clothes
  • Climbing chalk (to absorb sweat from hands)
  • Climbing shoes (how to choose a pair)

About Grand Rapids Boulder Project:

The Grand Rapids Boulder Project is an effort of the American Alpine Club – West Michigan Chapter in collaboration with Grand Rapids City Parks and Recreation Department to build and run climbing structures in Highland Park. They host events throughout the summer, fall, and spring to get folks out to learn more about climbing and engage with the climbing community. You can learn more about the project here.

Safety and GR Boulder Project guidelines: (Source: Guidelines: Grand Rapids Boulder Project)

There are woodchips at the bottom of both walls to soften falls if they happen, but remember, climbing is a dangerous sport! Climb at your own risk.

The Grand Rapids Boulder Park is for everyone. Encourage often, clean up, and minimize risk using the following guidelines:

  1. Encourage often. Psych is contagious.
  2. Walk around (not under) people climbing. They could fall on you. Ouch.
  3. Finish at the last hold for new climbers. Topping out is discouraged.
  4. Warm-up. Climbing puts strain on muscles and tendons.
  5. Climb down from the top. Jumping is just crazy.
  6. Be kind. You may make a friend. We all need friends.
  7. Let each person figure out the route. Share beta when asked. Ask freely.
  8. Climb with an adult watching. Especially if you are under 13.

Intro Techniques:

Following different routes: Routes designated on the wall for different paths to get to the top. In this case, the brown holds are associated with the number 19. Use 2 holds closest to the number to start the boulder problem you will solve to get to the top. Grab the first two holes, and use the same colors with your feet to get started on the wall.
