Parks

Supporting park ecology and outdoor recreation in Grand Rapids.

Parks Are a Vital Park of Our Community

We believe everyone in Grand Rapids deserves to play outside, connect to nature, and be part of the fabric of community. Parks not only make this possible, they are the foundation for making better world for us all.

Park Benefits

Health Benefits

People who have more access to park environments tend to be more physically active than those with limited access. Being outside in nature also reduces stress.

Environmental Benefits

Parks reduce air and water pollution; mitigate urban heat islands; and support diverse plant, animal, and insect populations.

Community Benefits

Parks—and activities in parks where people feel comfortable—build community and connection around our shared green spaces.

Fiscal Benefits

When our park ecosystems are healthy, it results in lower spending on infrastructure and grounds maintenance.

Our Parks Programs

Park Conservation

Alongside volunteers and community partners, we steward our natural environments through invasive species removal and native plantings.

Park Activation

Get outside and play! Our community events connect attendees with experts who can teach them about using park spaces and features, from wildflower walks to rock climbing.

Park Stewardship Program

In partnership with local Neighborhood Associations, residents’ “Friends of” parks group build community and support parks ecosystems.

Neighborhood Conservationist Classes

Builds your conservation skills and knowledge of ecology, recognizing and removing invasive species, and working safely in Grand Rapids parks.

BioBlitz

A day of volunteer-driven citizen science in Riverside Park, BioBlitz helps us track conservation efforts by documenting species in Riverside Park.
