Every Green Team member arrives at the meeting location (either our office or a GR park) at 9am. Everyone gets their bike, helmet, and water bottle ready. After a brief stretching session, we start watering trees, taking two 15 minute breaks throughout the work day. We finish the day by storing bikes, helmets and watering equipment, and leaving everything ready for the next day. Rinse and repeat! We will have educational excursions once a week to shake up the routine!
Participants will need transportation to and from our office at the beginning and the end of the workday. We will provide bikes and helmets to all Green Team members for transportation between job sites.
We average about 7 miles of biking per day, with plenty of breaks.
Friends of Grand Rapids Parks is hiring for its youth Summer Green Team! The team is made up of youth ages 14-21 who live within Greater Grand Rapids, with preference given to residents of the MLK Park, Roosevelt Park, Garfield Park, Oakdale, and Boston Square areas. The Green Team focuses on the care and maintenance of young trees that Friends has planted in the MLK Park, Roosevelt Park, Garfield Park, Oakdale, and Boston Square areas within the past two years. If you are interested in working outside in the fresh air this summer and exploring green careers (think forestry, landscaping, tree maintenance, civil and environmental engineering, and agriculture!) then this opportunity is for you! Friends of Grand Rapids Parks plants around 450 trees each planting season. As we look to holistically care for these trees, we need help watering these newly planted trees soon after being planted to give them the best chance to establish and survive in an urban environment. The Green Team Crew is a part of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks seasonal team that assists with planting, watering and basic maintenance of trees planted by our organization. This team will work together using the necessary equipment to water individual trees and complete basic tree maintenance on a weekly basis. At Will Employment: All employment with Friends of Grand Rapids Park is voluntary and is subject to termination by both Parties at will, with or without cause, and with or without notice, at any time. Nothing in this agreement shall be interpreted to be in conflict with or to eliminate or modify in any way the employment-at-will status of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks employees.
