The Grand Loop

Grand Rapids has a robust network of natural surface and paved non-motorized trails running through different parks around the city. Over time, these trails have been connected together through bike lanes, sidewalks, and riding on roads that are informally known as the ‘Grand Loop.’ The Grand Loop takes riders past local cultural institutions, cafes, restaurants, the Grand River, and breweries for a truly unique experience.

Our Work on the Grand Loop

In 2024, Friends was awarded a Trail Accelerator Grant to spearhead a feasibility study and trails plan to make the Grand Loop a formal trail system. In partnership with the City and the International Mountain Bike Alliance (IMBA), Friends is working with the City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation on a concept plan for improving and adding natural surface trails within the Grand Loop.

The Goal for the Grand Loop Trail System

Our friends at IMBA put together a conceptual map for the Grand Loop based on a community feedback survey. Friends is excited to continue partnering with different user groups, organizations, corporations, and individuals to bring the vision into reality while maintaining and improving what already exists.
