The IMBA (International Mountain Bicycling Association) Trail School, in partnership with Friends of GR Parks, is an immersive, hands-on workshop designed to educate trail stewards, land managers, and volunteers on sustainable trail building and maintenance techniques. Taking place from May 17-18, 2025, this multi-day event combines classroom instruction with fieldwork to provide participants with essential skills for designing, maintaining, and improving trails.

Saturday, May 17 (8:30 am-4:30 pm)
Classroom Sessions at Friends of Grand Rapids Parks Office
(720 Curve SW, Ste B, Grand Rapids, MI)
- Morning sessions cover trail user demographics, outdoor recreation plans, and land management strategies.
- Afternoon sessions focus on sustainable trail design principles, maintenance methodologies, and hands-on techniques.

Sunday, May 18 (8:30 am-5:00 pm)
Fieldwork at Ken-O-Sha Park
- On-site safety briefing and crew leadership training.
- Practical assessment of existing trails for maintenance and improvements.
- Hands-on experience in trail maintenance and construction techniques.
- End-of-day reflection and feedback session.
This workshop is ideal for anyone passionate about sustainable trails, from seasoned trail builders to new volunteers. Participants will gain valuable knowledge, hands-on skills, and connections within the trail stewardship community.
