Grow Your Conservation Knowledge and Volunteer Independently

The Friends of Grand Rapids Parks Neighborhood Conservationist certification builds your conservation skills and knowledge of ecology, recognizing and removing invasive species, and working safely in Grand Rapids parks. Upon completion of the Neighborhood Conservationist classes and field days, participants will be certified and allowed to complete independent volunteer work in designated Grand Rapids parks!

What You'll Learn

Neighborhood Conservationist Classes

Neighborhood Conservationist classes are taught by our on-staff conservation biologist! They are and always will be free. To become a Neighborhood Conservationist, attend all three classes (including the field day) and participate in a conservation workday. We also welcome anyone who’s just interested in learning more about one or two of the topics, but not completing every class or becoming a Neighborhood Conservationist. We’re always happy to share what we know about ecology and conservation and all are welcome.

Ecology

Welcome to Ecology! In this class, we explore foundational aspects of ecology, including discussing how different species are connected and support each other, threats to biodiversity, and ways to protect and steward biodiversity at home and in Grand Rapids parks. We also explore how people like you can make a difference for the insects, birds, and animals that call our parks home. This class is held indoors.

Invasive Species

Invasive species are the biggest “pollutant” in natural spaces. Our invasive species class discusses several exotic plant species and how they affect animal and plant habitats in Grand Rapids parks, as well as how we as people use our parks. (Did you know some invasive species harbor ticks that spread Lyme Disease?) This indoor class will also explore strategies for managing invasive species—and all the benefits that happen when you do!

Field Day and Safety Training

Our Field day and Safety Training reviews essential information for completing safe, effective conservation volunteer work in Grand Rapids parks. This includes safe use of tools and herbicides, safely handling invasive plants, and injury prevention. This class is held outdoors.

Conservation Workday

Get practical, hands-on experience doing conservation volunteering in a Grand Rapids park! Join the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks team and other volunteers and learn about different aspects of ecology, conservation, and the unique characteristics of our incredible Grand Rapids parks! This class is held outdoors in a park.
