Tips for Hiking Park Trails

November 17 is National Hiking Day, so this month we are highlighting hiking on trails in our parksĀ as a way to get outside and connect with nature. So here are some tips for getting out on the trails!

where to go and how to get there:

  • Here are a few hikes for first timers that are also great for more experienced adventurers: Aman Park, Huff Park, Garfield Nature Preserve, Richmond Park, Ken-O-Sha Park
  • VisitĀ Experience GRĀ for a list of other trails to visit all around Kent County
  • Download theĀ AllTrails appĀ to challenge yourself even more opportunities around the area and throughoutĀ the country.
  • Many of our trails are onĀ bus linesĀ in Grand Rapids

safety:

  • Hike with a buddy!
  • Going after dark? Do not leave home without a headlamp, a flashlight, or aĀ phone with aĀ flashlight toĀ guide you.
  • If you go alone, always tell someone where you are going before you head out.

gear:

  • You don’t need any fancy gear to go for a hike – you probably have most of what youĀ need!
  • Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, even in cooler months.
  • Wear comfortable shoes or boots with good tread.
  • Dress in layers, including a hat and gloves because when the sun goes down it gets cool fast in Michigan.
  • Wear a fanny pack,Ā small backpack or sling bag to hold your phone and keys, keeping your hands free.
